What the Scribe extension does that stepkeep does not

The Scribe extension is the front end of a larger product, and that product does things a browser extension alone cannot. If you need one of these, install Scribe.

  • Chrome and Edge Scribe publishes its extension for Chrome and for Edge. stepkeep is published on the Chrome Web Store only.
  • A link to share Every Scribe guide has a link and an embed, even on the free plan. stepkeep has no link: you send a file.
  • Comments for a team Scribe Pro Team adds comments on shared guides. stepkeep guides live in one browser profile, with no comment thread.

Searching for the Scribe extension usually means you want to record a task in the browser and get a guide out of it. Scribe's extension is how you record, but the guide is made and kept in Scribe's web app, under your account. That is what makes the share link work, and it is also why the screenshots leave your computer.

stepkeep does all of it inside the extension. The steps and screenshots are saved in your own browser profile, the blur is drawn there, and the export is a file written to your downloads folder. There is no stepkeep account and no stepkeep server, so there is nothing to sign in to and nothing to upload to.

That matters most on a locked-down work computer, where a browser extension is often the only thing IT lets you add. stepkeep asks Chrome for five permissions and no site access at install. It asks for a site when you start recording on it, and an administrator can set the company's logo and colours by Chrome policy.

Swapping the Scribe extension for stepkeep

  1. Keep what you already made

    Scribe's PDF, HTML and Markdown exports are on its Pro plans. On the free plan, keep the links to the guides you still need.

  2. Install stepkeep and record once

    stepkeep cannot import a Scribe guide. Recording one takes about as long as doing the task once, and the step sentences are written for you.

  3. Hand it out as a file

    Put your logo on it, then export a PDF, a single HTML file or Markdown for your wiki. Anyone can open it without an account.

Which extension to install

Choose the Scribe extension if…

  • You want to share each guide as a link that stays up to date.
  • Your team works in Edge, or you also need to record desktop programs.
  • A Scribe account and a cloud workspace are fine for what you record.

Choose stepkeep if…

  • You record admin panels or customer data, and the screenshots should stay on your machine.
  • You cannot or will not create an account for a documentation tool.
  • You want PDF, HTML or Markdown files and would rather pay 59 EUR once than every month.

Where do I get the Scribe extension?

Do I need an account to use the Scribe extension?

Yes. Scribe's desktop capture page says to sign up and log in to a free account to download the browser extension. stepkeep has no account at all: install it and record.

Is the Scribe extension free?

Installing it and the Basic plan are free. PDF, HTML and Markdown export and desktop capture are on the Pro plans, from 25 USD a month billed yearly. These are Scribe's list prices, checked on 24 September 2026.

Where does the Scribe extension keep my screenshots?

Scribe describes a cloud gallery for all team documentation, and its guides are shared by link. The screenshots are kept on Scribe's servers, not on your computer. stepkeep keeps them in your Chrome profile.

What does the stepkeep extension ask permission for?

Five Chrome permissions: the active tab, tabs, storage, scripting and downloads. It has no access to any site at install and asks for one when you start recording on it. It notes which element you clicked, never the value you type into a field.
