What the Windows and Mac tools do better

Steps Recorder, Folge and Snagit are desktop programs, and stepkeep lives in a browser. On a Chromebook that is the whole point, but it has a price, so here it is first.

  • They record the whole screen. Any program, any window. stepkeep sees only the Chrome tab you are recording: not the ChromeOS Settings app, not the Files app, not an Android app.
  • Steps Recorder costs nothing. It comes with Windows, with no guide limit. stepkeep's free plan keeps five guides at a time and puts a small watermark on the PDF.
  • Their files are ordinary files. A desktop app saves a project wherever you like. stepkeep keeps guides in Chrome's storage on that one Chromebook, and with no account they do not follow you to another.
  • They survive a wiped session. Some school and shop-floor Chromebooks erase everything at sign-out. There, export the guide before you sign out, or it goes with the session.

A Chromebook adds features from the Chrome Web Store, not from a Windows or Mac installer. So the tools people name when they want a click guide, Steps Recorder, Folge and Snagit, have nothing to offer the school office, the front desk or the call centre that runs on Chromebooks.

Most of what happens on a Chromebook happens in a browser tab anyway: the Google Workspace admin console, the learning platform, the booking system, the HR portal. That is exactly what stepkeep records. Each click, typed field and choice becomes a numbered step, with the clicked control ringed on its screenshot and a sentence in the words the button uses.

Scribe and Tango are Chrome extensions too, so they also work on a Chromebook. The difference is where the guide goes: both keep it in their cloud, behind an account. stepkeep keeps it in Chrome's storage on the Chromebook, and the extension sends it nowhere.

Your first Chromebook guide in three steps

  1. Add stepkeep to Chrome

    Open the Chrome Web Store on the Chromebook, press Add to Chrome and pin the icon to the toolbar. On a managed Chromebook, ask IT to allow it.

  2. Record the task in a tab

    Open the tab, press Record this tab, and do the task. Chrome asks once for that site. Clicks, typed fields and choices become steps; opening a page does not.

  3. Stop, blur, export

    Press Stop recording, blur a pupil's or customer's name once and it is blurred on every step, then export a PDF. It saves through Chrome's downloads, into the Files app.

  • The task runs in desktop software, and the people writing guides have Windows or Mac machines: then Folge, Snagit or Steps Recorder.
  • You need to show ChromeOS settings, the Files app or Android apps. No extension can record those; the Chromebook's own screen capture takes them one picture at a time.
  • Guides must follow you from device to device, and a cloud account is fine: then Scribe or Tango.

Choose stepkeep if…

Is there a Steps Recorder for Chromebook?

Not built in. Steps Recorder is part of Windows, and the Chromebook's own screen capture takes one screenshot or one video at a time. stepkeep fills the gap for anything in a browser tab: press record, do the task, press stop, and every click is a numbered step with a screenshot.

Can I install Folge or Snagit on a Chromebook?

Not as of 23 September 2026. Folge lists Windows and macOS, and TechSmith lists Snagit for Windows and macOS. Neither names a ChromeOS version. If you have a Windows or Mac machine as well, both record desktop software, which stepkeep cannot.

Does stepkeep work on a school or work Chromebook?

Yes, if your admin allows Chrome Web Store extensions. The admin can also force-install it for everyone from the Google Admin console. There is no account to create and nothing to sign in to, and the extension sends no screenshot anywhere, so there is no data transfer for the school or company to assess.

Where do my guides go on a Chromebook?

Into Chrome's own storage on that Chromebook, and nowhere else. Exports save through Chrome's downloads into the Files app, and from there you decide where they go. On a shared Chromebook that erases everything at sign-out, export the guide first.

Can stepkeep record the ChromeOS settings or Android apps?

No. It records web pages in a Chrome tab and nothing else. Chrome keeps every extension out of its own settings pages, the Chrome Web Store and Android apps, so no extension can record those.

What does it cost for a team on Chromebooks?

Five guides are free, with a small watermark on the PDF. Personal is 59 EUR once for one person. Team is 149 EUR once for every employee and contractor of one company, however many Chromebooks they use. There is no subscription.
