What the Tango subscription buys that stepkeep does not

A per-seat fee is fair if your team uses what it pays for. If one of these is the reason you are pricing Tango, the subscription is the better choice.

  • Desktop capture Tango Pro records desktop apps as well as the browser. stepkeep records browser tabs and nothing else.
  • Links with viewer insights Tango shares a workflow as a link or an embed and shows who viewed it. stepkeep guides are files, and a file does not report back.
  • Guidance inside the app Tango Enterprise adds Guide Me, Pins and Automations, which walk people through a task in the live app. stepkeep writes a guide to read.
  • A single month One month of Pro for one person is 26 USD, less than stepkeep Personal. For one short project you then cancel, Tango costs less.

Tango pricing and stepkeep over three years

Tango lists a price per user per month, and the rate drops at three users. A guide tool tends to stay in use for years, so the rows below add the list prices up for one person, five users and ten, with no price change assumed.

Why Tango's price grows with every seat and stepkeep's does not

stepkeep
$149 once for one company, because there is no server and no seat to count
Tango
A fee per user, every month or year, for the cloud that stores and shares your workflows

Tango prices Pro per user. On yearly billing, two people pay 22 USD each, 528 USD a year. A third person moves the team to the 15 USD rate, so three people pay 540 USD a year: the third seat costs 12 USD. After that, every new person adds 180 USD a year, and the bill for five people over three years is 2,700 USD.

That is fair for what Tango runs: a cloud where your workflows are stored, shared as links and counted when people view them. Each user is someone that cloud serves every month.

stepkeep has nothing running. The recording, the editing, the blur and the export all happen in your browser, and the guides stay in your own browser profile. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no seat to count. stepkeep Team is $149 once for every employee and contractor of one company, whether that is three people or thirty, and every update is included.

Moving from Tango before the next renewal

  1. Export while you still pay

Tango's PDF, HTML and Markdown exports are on Pro and Enterprise. Export the workflows you want to keep before your plan runs out.

  2. Record your most used guides again

stepkeep cannot import a Tango workflow. Recording one takes about as long as doing the task once, and the step sentences are written for you.

  3. Hand it out as a file

Put your logo on it, then export a PDF, a single HTML file or Markdown for your wiki. Anyone can open it without an account.

Paying for Tango or for stepkeep

Choose Tango if…

  • You need to document desktop apps, not only browser tabs.
  • You share guides as links and want to see who opened them.
  • You want in-app guidance such as Guide Me and can budget for Enterprise.
  • You need guides for one short project and will cancel after a month.

Choose stepkeep if…

  • Your guides are about browser tasks and the screenshots should stay on your machine.
  • Your team is growing and you do not want the bill to grow with it.
  • You write guides every month for years and do not want a renewal date.
  • You want files you own: PDF, HTML or Markdown, readable without an account.
